About Thousand Islands
The Thousand Islands is an archipelago of over 1800 islands in the St. Lawrence and stretches for about 80kms between Kingston and Brockville along the border between the US and Canada. Featuring the Frontenac Arch Biosphere and the Rideau Heritage Route, the region has been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere reserve. A vacation paradise, the Thousand Islands has long attracted wealthy vacationers from both Canada and America. Luxurious summer homes can be spotted along the St. Lawrence including the magnificent Boldt Castle, built between 1900-1904 by the general manager of the Waldrof-Asrtoria, George Boldt for his wife before she died. Now owned and operated by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, Boldt Castle has become a major tourist attraction and an enduring monument of one man’s devotion to his wife.
The islands of course, have seen much more than just sun burnt tourists, the St Lawrence acted as a military highway between the 17th and 18th centuries when France, Britain and America all fought for ownership over their “discovered” territory. The Patriot War in 1837-1838 saw pirates sailing the St. Lawrence, followed by Prohibition bootleggers in the 1920s. The most enduring conflict however is: who is responsible for creating the gourmet salad topper, Thousand Island dressing? But the one thing that is not up for debate is that the Thousand Islands is a world-class waterfront destination. Whether you are looking to cruise the islands for a season, or plant roots permanently, there really are a thousand reasons to visit.
